EPISODE 8 - Harrison Ford/Cowboys and Aliens/Indiana Jones/Morning Glory/Kontroll/Rec/

So, our task this week was to answer the question Harrison Ford, wha happened !!??

As an iconic Hollywood actor, Ford reigned supreme throughout the end of the 70s and the 80s playing two fallable hero roles that will last the ages and also carving himself a niche as a diverse leading man in a series of interesting choices.

Lately though, over the last decade, while the choices have remained varied, the quality of both the films and the performances have dropped off. Why? Are there no good scripts for him or has he given up?

We look at his latest offering Cowboys and Aliens, the Indiana Jones films, Morning Glory and dip in and out of the rest of his catalogue.

Do we finally come up with a satisfactory answer to the Ford conundrum, well you'll have to listen to find out!

We also, finally, get around to reviewing our recommendations from episode 1 - Rec, the Spanish first-person, 'zombie' horror and Kontroll, a bizarre little comedic thriller from Hungary, so for all those still listening and who care, that's a treat!

  1. Question 1: The 1992 director's cut of "Blade Runner" is, for my admittedly unscientific sample of SF fans, the version of the film we could've all lived with quite well. It removes all the annoying things the studio ordered into the theatrical cut without being plodding (like the so-called Final Cut), pointless (like the "ultra rare" Workprint cut), or redundant (like the unrated 1982 International Cut, which is the version most people saw on cable between '82 and '92, and the version a lucky few probably still own on laser disc today). For me, the choice comes down to how populist I feel at any given time.

    Question 2: LaBeouf got his first starring role in a horrible sitcom called "Even Stevens," and that's one of the main reasons why he suddenly seemed to emerge in 2007-8. Like any good infection, he'd been slowly building up under the surface for years, actually netting himself a Daytime Emmy at age 16.

    Because it was the Disney Channel, no one paid him any attention, and after his series ended in 2003, the Beef knocked around doing the usual child-actor-looking-to-make-it-big bit parts and supporting roles. One of which was in Disney's own "Holes," from 2003, which I ignored because I dismissed it as another YA-Fiction-To-Movie cash in on the Harry Potter craze. I first remember seeing the Beef in Alex Proyas' and Will Smith's 2004 public self-immolation, "I, Robot," but only because I avoided "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd," or "Constantine," where he played similar roles.

    Unbeknownst to all of us, Steven Spielberg saw "Holes" and – God only knows why – put LaBeouf on the short list for the lead role in "Disturbia" – a remake of "Rear Window" that tries to pretend it's not, despite that being its only selling point. "Disturbia"'s financial success gave Spielberg all the excuse he needed to cast Shia in everything that might conceivably appeal to adolescents, because Spielberg's given up making artistic decisions. These days, no one at Dreamworks is allowed to spit without running a complex series of cost-benefit spreadsheets filled in with marketing data points. Casting Star X in Film Y with director Z will generate Profit Margin A. That's how we got the Crystal Skull and the Transformers Trilogy. I found your "Shia-is-the-median" theory hilarious because its uncomfortably close to the truth.

  2. Shame this was posted way too late to save me from seeing Cowboys vs Aliens - quite agree.
    Great section on Harrison Ford. I think he gets hired on the same basis as Sean Connery - he plays himself & thats what you pay him for. Thats why I was interested to see him in Cowboys, and why I was so disappointed when it was more of the same. Not sure I can agree with you about Lady in the Water as his last good film - seem to remember it was drivel.
    Question on Blade Runner: I'd watch the Directors Cut from choice, but they all have something to give. If you're interested enough to do it, watch them all for the different viewpoints of the characters, the is he/isn't he, and morality of treatment of replicants overall. It is a bit of a mission though and you'll probably need to take notes, so really only for either fans or those interested in the effect of editing on the final outcome of a film. This is even more true of Brazil - remember the two cuts are taken from exactly the same lengths of celluloid.
    I'm a Star Wars fan-boy, but you're quite safe. Lucas can't write a script or direct for toffee. Ask anyone with sense & they'll tell you Empire is the best: that Lucas had the least input on it is no coincidence. Look at the prequels for all the proof you need.

  3. The movie seems to be great one. I listened many things about it. I saw some trailers for this film as well. It is looking to be great one. I will certainly watch it..
